Astoria a neighborhood in Northwest Queens, conveniently close to Manhattan, located across the East river. Astoria was originally named Hallet’s Cove. It was renamed Astoria after real state millionaire John Jacob Astor in order to persuade him to invest in the neighborhood. Astoria was first settled by the Dutch and German immigrants in the colonial 1650’s when William Hallett Sr. received a land grant for Hallets Cove, followed by Czech, Irish and Italian immigrants in the late 19th Century.
